From K - Finished: Moving Walkways

This quilt has felt like it's been a long time coming, but in actuality I only started it in the early winter. I struggled with this quilt for more reasons than I'd like to remember and it feels a bit like my brain was wiped clean as soon as I finished the binding. So lets glaze over all of the frustrations and look at what makes it all worth while.

As much this quilt challenged my patience, I have to say that it was well worth all of the effort. What I love most about this quilt is that the arrows form a chevron-esque pattern across the quilt top. Even after all of the seam ripping that occurred, I am really glad that I took the time to tweak the original Pow Wow pattern to get this effect, and in the end I know that I made the right decision for me. The black to white gradient layout that I did on this quilt also really speaks to my style and was a lot of fun to work on.

For a backing on this quilt I went with an old favorite, Britten Number Fabric from Ikea. I used this print last fall for a quilt that I gave as a wedding gift, as I felt like this numbered print is quite fitting. Since this quilt is also a wedding gift and has a black and white quilt top, it seemed like the perfect backing option.

For the quilting on this quilt I decided to out a few new FMQ designs. Inspired by the Plume Feather design in Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters but realizing that my blue chevrons weren't quite wide enough, I decided to do half a plume of feathers instead by making a line of slanted S shapes. In the B&W chevrons I chose to do loops, with the occasional double-loop thrown in for fun. Around the border I decided to do a slightly wider version of Angela's Wishbone pattern.

• Fabric: Black and white fabric scraps (largely from this quilt), Kona Water (background and sashing), and Fabricland B&W Flower print (binding)

I also went ahead and made a custom label for the couple using the Love Birds in Grey print from Sarah Watts' Feather 'n Stitch fabric line, and I think they'll appreciate the extra special touch. Arn't they little love birds the sweetest? I can't wait for them to see it next month!

From K - Moving walkways quilt top

This past weekend it felt like it snowed without stopping, so naturally when life gives you a winter, you go tobogganing and you sew! Well at least that's what I chose to do, and in doing so, I managed to make some serious progress on my pow wow quilt top... and maybe I got in a bit of tobogganing before the photo shoot :) 

 

 

I've used the Pow Wow Quilt Pattern by Cluck Cluck Sew as the guide for this quilt top, but made a few alterations along the way. I decided early on in my planning process that I wanted to off-set the rows, both mimicking a split left to right chevron, while simultaneously creating a sense of movement up and down.

 

 

The movement that is created in this simple edit to the pattern really reminds me of the moving sidewalks in large airport terminals. Since the Kona Solid I chose to use is called Water, an airport theme with a sunny destination seems to fit the bill for this quilt perfectly.

 

 

I managed to make the binding this weekend, and plan to baste and sew this into a quilt very soon. I'm loving all the progress I'm accomplishing on my WiPs in 2013, and I can't wait to show you a few more projects that have been catching my attention. Happy WiP Wednesday everyone!

 

 

From K - A modern pow wow

Unable to simple focus on one project at once, I took the opportunity to kick off a new quilt idea this weekend. Cluck Cluck Sew's Pow Wow quilt pattern has been rolling around in my mind ever since I began work on my last finished quilt Boys + Birds + Bees, using their equally lovely Inside Out pattern.

Cluck Cluck Sew's patterns have recently become some of my favourites to sew. Clear, concise, and printed on mid-weight card stock, they are a pleasure to read, follow and sew. I knew the moment I came across the Pow Wow pattern that it would make a fantastic modern quilt so I tossed it in my shopping cart.

Black and white prints have become a staple for me this year so I broke out my remnant stash to make up this pattern in a bit of a scrappy style.

My idea is to use a bright Kona solid background, and gradients of black to grey to white for the arrows. I'm currently tossing an idea around of off-setting the rows so they resemble divided chevrons, but I'll see how the blocks come together first.

Now the hard part is to decide which bright Kona solid I want to use! What WiPs have you been adding to your list?
