<a href="http://onthewindyside.co.nz/" title="2015 FAL at On the Windy Side"><img alt="2015 FAL at On the Windy Side" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-h_tyOVLkyuA/VGhojZaY2vI/AAAAAAAAEbQ/btpcN7fxQKA/s1600/2015FALbutton200.png" style="border: none;" /></a></div>
<br />
It's that time again...time for another list of <a href="http://www.onthewindyside.co.nz/p/2015-finish-along.html">Finish Along</a> goals.<br />
<br />
I accomplished so few of my <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2015/01/from-2015-finish-along-q1-goals.html">Q1 goals</a> that I when I went to compile a list of Q2 goals, I realized that the list was almost identical. Discouraged, I decided that I would sit out Q2 and focus on trying to check a few things off my list so that I could get excited about Q3 with a fresh list of goals.<br />
<br />
There are still quite a few stragglers on this list but I was able to make room for a couple of new projects so I decided it was time to get back on the band wagon.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>1. <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2013/05/from-decisions-decisions.html">Superstar Lonestar Quilt</a></b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/8710741820" title="Lone Star Layout 3 by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Lone Star Layout 3" height="375" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8277/8710741820_f6b3ce066a.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<br />
An oldie from 2013. This quilt is all done and ready for binding. I still need to beg for some more OOP yardage for my binding but assuming that's successful, this should be pretty quick to finish up.<br />
<br />
<b>2. <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2012/07/from-half-swoon.html">P & B Swoon Quilt</a></b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/7518217552" title="P & B Swoon Quilt Top by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="P & B Swoon Quilt Top" height="375" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7248/7518217552_2232b0c811.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
The binding has been cut and pieced. Just need to sew it to the quilt top and do the hand stitching. Totally manageable.<br />
<br />
<b>3. Saltwater Quilt</b><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<b><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15593081414" title="Saltwater Color Block Quilt Blocks by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Saltwater Color Block Quilt Blocks" height="333" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7499/15593081414_5acbdcf515.jpg" width="500" /></a></b></div>
<br />
This quilt has also been quilted and is just waiting for a binding (you be sensing a bit of a theme here). Looking forward to getting this done. I always forget how much work goes into making a queen-sized quilt.<br />
<br />
<b>4. <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/search/label/donut%20quilt">Donuts Quilt</a></b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

</div>
<br />
This is the last of the almost finished quilts that needs to be bound. Looks like I'll spend most of my quarter curled up on the couch with needle in hand!<br />
<br />
<b>5. Big Charming Quilt</b><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/16060365780" title="IMG_5054 by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_5054" height="333" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7540/16060365780_a96f4b2587.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<br />
The top is finished and I have a plan for the back. Just need to piece the backing before I can send it off to be quilted.<br />
<br />
<b>6. </b><b><a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2015/06/from-spoolish-quilt.html">Spoolish Quilt</a></b><br />
<b><br /></b>6 of the 15 blocks needed for this quilt are finished. There are lots of tiny pieces in this quilt so it will be a bit of an adventure but hopefully I can stick with it for the last 9.<br />
<b><br /></b>

<b><br /></b>
<b>7. <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2013/07/from-one-for-road.html">Meadow Quilt</a></b><br />
<b><br /></b>
An old WIP from a Lizzy House workshop I took back in 2013 right before moving to California. I worked on the blocks during the move but never actually got the whole thing wrapped up. I want to finish this by August so I can take it to Toronto with me in the Lizzy House Mystery Quilt class I signed up for.<br />

<br />
<b>8. Square Dance Quilt</b><br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm hoping this quilt will be a walk in the park, a weekend commitment at best. I already have the print fabrics cut and now just need to cut the background fabric. Really looking forward to this one since Denyse Schmidt is one of my quilt heros and I think this will be the perfect way to showcase some of my favourite prints. </div>
<br />
<b>10. Two Pairs of Stripey Socks</b><br />
<br />
Gearing up for vacation, I decided to cast on a couple of pairs of socks. I really love knitting with self-striping yarn and these socks are no exception. The first pair is well underway and the second one is still in the planning stage.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

</div>
<b><br /></b>
<b>10. Snowfling Mitts</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/16114963250" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;" title="Snowfling Mitts by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Snowfling Mitts" height="333" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7520/16114963250_7758d4d9b1.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
I started these in November 2013, just after seeing <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2013/12/from-k-snowfling-mitts.html">Kelsey's pair</a> in real life. They are so wonderfully warm and cozy. I really want to get them finished before too much longer. There's still lots to do so we'll see how I make out.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>11. Hiro Pullover</b><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/16116200889" title="Hiro Pullover Sleeve by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Hiro Pullover Sleeve" height="333" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7536/16116200889_1a82a6652c.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<br />
This sweater was on my Q1 list but got derailed when I was studying for the bar exam last winter. I really want to finish it but I've lost a ton of weight in the last few months and now it's way too big. A good problem to have but I'm still trying to work up the courage to rip and re-knit.<br />
<br />
<b>12. Striped Shawl</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
I knit a shawl using this gorgeous yarn. At this point it just needs to have the ends woven in and a good blocking. Shouldn't take too long but I am notorious for avoiding finishing work so we'll see.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
It's an ambitious list but I'm crossing my fingers that I'll make some progress this quarter.<div class="blogger-post-footer">This post is by either Amanda or Kelsey and was first published at <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com">Everyday Fray</a>. After not immediately finding what I was looking for, I instead grabbed a long forgotten quilt kit that I bought on a bright pink induced whim and set aside for a day when I would be <strike>crazy enough</strike> talented enough to actually take it on.<br />
<br />
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/18894609045" title="IMG_5964 by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_5964" height="333" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/278/18894609045_11f1e2da49.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<br />
Coming in at 612 triangle pieces for a twin size quilt or 52 pieces per pieced spool block, this is the kind of project where you want take a bit of time to work out a proper 1/4" seam allowance. A lesson I only learned after my first block ended up a little wonkier than I might have liked.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/18708570259" title="Spoolish Quilt Block by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Spoolish Quilt Block" height="333" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/404/18708570259_ba5f14410b.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Seam allowance issues resolved, things have begun chugging along nicely enough and my blocks are starting to lay flatter and be more uniform in size. I managed to wrap up block 5 of 15 this morning and am actually enjoying the process enough to be excited about the 10 remaining blocks.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/18868470636" title="Spoolish Quilt Blocks by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Spoolish Quilt Blocks" height="333" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5344/18868470636_a11801a558.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<br />
Quite a change in attitude when you consider that when I bought this kit, part of me thought that I would never actually work up the courage to make it. Turns out it wasn't the scary green eyed monster in my (stash) closet that I'd made it out to be...<br />

Back in the early part of this year, things were really really busy. I had virtually no sewing time and needed to find other (less time consuming) outlets for my crafty inclinations. I started pulling fabric stacks for quilts I would never get around to making as a stopgap until things eased up.</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Surprisingly, the act of planning the quilt was enough and by never aiming to actually make the planned quilt, I avoided the stress of overloading my to-do list. A few of the stacks got posted to <a href="https://instagram.com/everydayfray">Instagram</a> but that's really where things ended off.</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now that I have a little more time, I keep thinking about actually making some of these "planned quilts" and have finally started doing just that.</div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first stack I grabbed started from one of my favourite prints in Liberty of London's <a href="http://www.redpepperquilts.com/2012/07/bloomsbury-gardens-liberty-lifestyle.html">Bloomsbury Gardens</a> collection, Lytton in Magenta.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/17659291664" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Lytton print from Bloomsbury Gardens by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Lytton print from Bloomsbury Gardens" height="333" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8787/17659291664_686f7bcdae.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The mix of magenta, chartreuse, teal and navy in a varied bouquet of flowers just makes my heart sing but when I started pulling fabrics for my quilt, I ended up substituting the magentas in the original print for corals. The final stack of prints is reminiscent of the original print but definitely stands on its own.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/18095691659" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="IMG_5830 by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_5830" height="333" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7792/18095691659_fde4a522d7.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A couple of weekends ago, I got to cutting out my fabrics and perfecting my <a href="http://www.theworkroom.ca/store/johanna-masko-%3A-donuts-%3A-quilt-pattern/dp/8057">Donuts Quilt</a> layout.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<span style="text-align: justify;">The quilt top got finished last weekend and I sent it off to be quilted earlier this week. I'm hoping to share the finished quilt soon!</span><br />

Kelsey's brother was engaged last year. As soon as <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2014/07/from-finished-red-letter-day-quilt.html">Bree's wedding quilt</a> was gifted, we agreed that we would make another joint quilt for Kelsey's brother and his new wife.<br />
<br />
<span style="line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">Predictably, months passed, we got busy with other things and we never actually took the time to plan anything . In about March of this year, I asked Kelsey whether she thought we still had time. A few text messages later we had a plan.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">We had agreed that blue was a good choice and that it would make sense to keep the quilt mostly monochromatic, moving from white to black through shades of grey, aqua, teal and navy.</span><br />
<span style="line-height: 18.4799995422363px;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">Kelsey pulled three different fabric stacks from her stash to find a range that had the feel we were looking for. The first selection ended up being the winner since it had the most contrast while still shifting nicely between the different colours.</span><br />
<span style="line-height: 18.4799995422363px;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="line-height: 18.4799995422363px;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">Since I was mid-move, she Kelsey cut all of the fabrics into squares and grouped them by colour family before popping them in the mail with her half of the quilt and some short instructions scrawled onto a scrap of paper.</span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<span style="line-height: 18.4799995422363px;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">A nerve wracking week later, the fabric arrived and I got my half of the quilt laid-out and sewn together before sending it off to </span><span style="line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">be long-armed by <a href="http://www.crinklelove.com/">Sarah of Crinklelove</a>.</span><br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The quilt came back from Sarah a few days before we left for the wedding. I happened upon the same fabric I used to bind my <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/search/label/white%20star%20quilt" style="line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">White Star quilt</a> while digging through the <span style="line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">stash and decided that it would be perfect.</span></div>

<span style="line-height: 18.4799995422363px;"><span style="line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">It took me a cab ride, two flights, a pub lunch, the tail end of a late-night Harry Potter movie and the drive to the wedding to get the binding stitched down and a label attached. Luckily, the quilt got done on time and I even managed to talk the </span><span style="line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">Mr. into holding up the quilt for a few quick photos on the way to the ceremony.</span></span></div>

It's been quite the unintended blog hiatus for us. Kelsey has been working like crazy and I've been busy working and moving house. It's been hard to start blogging again as the list of things I want to post gets longer and longer and it's difficult to know where to begin. Often it's simpler not to post than to figure out how to collect my thoughts to draft something.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That said, I've missed this space and I've missed the longer discussions that arise from posting about my creative process here on the blog. As much as I love Instagram, it's hard to do justice to something you've spent months making with one photo, a few lines of text and a hash tag or two. So with these reflections in mind, I hope you'll forgive the glut of "old" projects that I'll be sharing over the next few weeks as I stumble through the pics on my SD card and share those that mean the most to me.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In that vein, I've been meaning to share this cardigan that I finished back in November. I started it back in July but did most of the knitting on our trip to New Zealand and Australia in August of last year. In true Amanda-style, it took me another three months after getting home to seam and block the pieces I knit so that I could finally wear it.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/16116737007" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="IMG_4918 by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_4918" height="333" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7578/16116737007_fc3d14c128.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The pattern is Amy Miller's <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/olive-basket">Olive Basket Cardigan</a>. I happened upon it on Ravelry one day and decided it was the perfect basic for a California winter. I'm really pleased with how it came out which is a treat since I haven't knit a sweater since about 2008 and was long overdue for something new.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/16115210440" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;" title="IMG_4909 by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_4909" height="333" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8631/16115210440_7360ed4705.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
I managed to use some long hoarded Rowan Felted Tweed for this which makes this finish all the more exciting for a girl who recently had to pack up and move her rather voluminous stash.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/16116733717" title="IMG_4888 by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_4888" height="333" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7512/16116733717_d57c914893.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Although I've made quite a few handknit sweaters over the years, this is the first one that I've really gotten much wear out of. I think the fact that it's a simple cardigan means that it's easy to just throw on when I leave the house. You can find some more details on my <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/kisforknitter/olive-basket">Ravelry page</a> if you need them.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It feels good to be back. I'm looking forward to spending more time in this space again soon!</div>

You can probably imagine how excited we are to hear that our friend Shannon of <a href="http://littleluvins.com/">Little Luvins</a> combined forces with her graphic designer sister, Colleen of <a href="http://pinwheelprintshop.com/">Pinwheel Print Shop</a>, to bring us <a href="http://booinstitches.com/">Boo In Stitches</a>.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
"What is <a href="http://booinstitches.com/">Boo In Stitches</a>?" you ask. Well, in their words it is a collaboration between ink and thread. In ours, it is an awesome new company that sells funny sewing related art prints that are hand drawn and hand lettered by Colleen.<br />

I have so many half-finished projects on the go at the moment that it seemed like an excellent idea to join <a href="http://www.onthewindyside.co.nz/">Adrianne</a> for the <a href="http://www.onthewindyside.co.nz/p/2015-finish-along.html">2015 Finish-Along</a> in the hopes that I'll get some stuff off my plate before a guest succumbs to a batting avalanche while sleeping in our "guest room."<br />
<br />
<b>1. <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2014/11/from-best-laid-plans.html">Oh What Fun! Christmas Quilt</a></b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15869326251" title="Oh What Fun! Blocks by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Oh What Fun! Blocks" height="333" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8638/15869326251_5911c76792.jpg" width="500" /></a> </div>
Intended as a Christmas 2014 gift, it didn't quite make it. I'm determined to get it ready for 2015. The top is finished and I just got this bad boy back from the longarmer. Now it just needs a binding and label.<br />
<br />
<b>2. <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2013/05/from-decisions-decisions.html">Superstar Lonestar Quilt</a></b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/8710741820" title="Lone Star Layout 3 by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Lone Star Layout 3" height="375" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8277/8710741820_f6b3ce066a.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<br />
An oldie from 2013. I'm still working on piecing the background fabric to the star for this one. Once is finished it will need borders and backing before it can head off to the longarm quilter. I love this quilt and really want to get it finished.<br />
<br />
<b>3. <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2012/07/from-half-swoon.html">P & B Swoon Quilt</a></b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/7518217552" title="P & B Swoon Quilt Top by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="P & B Swoon Quilt Top" height="375" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7248/7518217552_2232b0c811.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
Another oldie from the opening days of this blog in July 2012. It's been basted and ready to quilt since then but I keep putting it off since I'm intimidated by how big it is. I'm planning to unbaste it and make the backing a little bigger so I can send it off to be longarmed. Done is better than perfect at this point.<br />
<br />
<b>4. Flannel and Voile baby blankets</b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/16061905037" title="IMG_5055 by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_5055" height="333" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7483/16061905037_05c40c36ec.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<br />
I've made a few of these in the past and have five more that only need a satin binding sewn on. I'm not sure how many of these I'll get through this quarter but with another influx of babies due shortly, it would be great to get them all finished and re-homed!<br />
<br />
<b>5. Cutting Corners Quilt</b><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15625334164" title="IMG_5053 by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_5053" height="333" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7467/15625334164_49414ce9d6.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is a small lap quilt that I worked on last summer. It's been quilted and just needs a binding before it can replace the down comforter on my couch as my go-to TV blanket. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<b>6. Saltwater Quilt</b><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<b><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15593081414" title="Saltwater Color Block Quilt Blocks by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Saltwater Color Block Quilt Blocks" height="333" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7499/15593081414_5acbdcf515.jpg" width="500" /></a></b></div>
<br />
I started this as a bit of a stash busting, palette cleanser when the pressure of holiday sewing was starting to make me twitchy. The top is still in pieces so this will need a fair amount of time before it's ready to rock.<br />
<br />
<b>7. Big Charming Quilt</b><br />

I've convinced myself that this bad boy is a weekend commitment. Hoping I'm not too far off in my assessment.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Another quilt that I've decided will be a walk in the park. I already have the print fabrics ready to sew and now just need to cut the background fabric. Really looking forward to this one since Denyse Schmidt is one of my quilt heros and I think this will be the perfect way to showcase some of my favourite prints. </div>

<b>9. Dreamweaver Quilt</b><br />

<br />
This Tula Pink fabric has been cluttering up my stash for far too long. Looking forward to actually enjoying some of it by getting it made into a quilt I've long admired.<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is from my January 2013 list so I'm pretty serious about getting this one done. I've finished knitting this one. Just have some finishing work (weaving in ends, stitching the picot edging down, blocking) left.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<b>11. Snowfling Mitts</b><br />

<br />
I started these in November 2013, just after seeing Kelsey's pair in real life over Thanksgiving. They are so wonderfully warm and cozy. I really want to get them finished before too much longer. There's still lots to do so we'll see how I make out.<br />

<br />
This sweater was a bit of a last minute add-on but now that I've started knitting it, I'm having a hard time stopping. With worsted weight yarn, knit in the round, this one is just flying off the needles.<br />
<br />
Phewf! That list seems a lot longer written out than it did in my head. It should be an adventure!<div class="blogger-post-footer">This post is by either Amanda or Kelsey and was first published at <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com">Everyday Fray</a>. <p style="text-align: justify;">Just two months ago, I was very genuinely over the moon with excitement to show you my very first hand knit sweater, my <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2014/10/from-k-finished-grace-cardigan.html" target="_blank" title="">Grace Cardigan</a>. Today, just a few months later, I'm back to share my second ever knit sweater - sqeeeeeel! *excuse me while I do a little happy dance!*</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15920096825" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7491/15920096825_ebf8000b9d_z.jpg" id="blogsy-1417412009476.406" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="504"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sundottir" target="_blank" title="">Sundottir</a> wooed me from the beginning, and continues to woo me every time I put it on. I made minimal edits to the pattern, which included lengthening the body and arms, as well as sizing down two sizes on the arms (all of which give this sweater a practically perfect fit).</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15920102745" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8667/15920102745_2d98f0b683_c.jpg" id="blogsy-1417412009464.863" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="750"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I found this project to be a perfect balance of quick (hello stocking knit body!), and fun (colour work yoke for the win!). All in all it took me just over five weeks to turn five skeins of yarn into a wearable sweater!</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15918149231" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8600/15918149231_b100bd089f.jpg" id="blogsy-1417412009422.61" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="333"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I picked up the Malabrigo Rios (worsted weight) in the colourway Plomo from my LYS for the primary colour, and paired it with a simple natural wool for a contrasting yoke. I've worn this sweater more than a dozen times since finishing it in early November, and it wears like a dream. </p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15734089719" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8578/15734089719_2b2fb0baa4_c.jpg" id="blogsy-1417412009434.6604" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="751"></a><span style="text-align: justify; line-height: 1.3em;"> </span>
</div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I'm still hooked on the fair isle / colour work band wagon, so don't expect this to be the last sweater you see me whip up this winter. I foresee a few more cozy knits in my future, maybe even another Sundottir!</p>

Two years ago, when I had only just started quilting, I fell for Elizabeth Hartman's blog, <a href="http://www.ohfransson.com/" target="_blank" title="">Oh Fransson!</a>, followed quickly by my love of her <a href="http://ohfransson.bigcartel.com/product/new-wave-quilts-modern-patchwork-pdf-pattern" target="_blank" title="">New Wave Quilt pattern</a>. As a novice quilter with only three other quilts under my belt, I thought this was a good next step.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15712604377" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="395" id="blogsy-1417396167451.5781" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7470/15712604377_88b4af3d48.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This quilt marked<span style="line-height: 1.3em; text-align: justify;"> my first foray into quilting with a more modern design, and was the first time I ever tried free motion quilting. Simultaneously, it also happened to be</span> the first time I had ever ordered fabric online (<a href="http://www.fatquartershop.com/" target="_blank" title="">Fat Quarter Shop </a>to be exact!).
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15710883678" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="507" id="blogsy-1417396167449.0286" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7541/15710883678_43f95428b8_z.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
While I'm not traditionally a crayola colour scheme kind of lady, I feel hard for the little owl prints! I think this is a timeless treasures line, thought the name escapes me.<span style="line-height: 1.3em; text-align: center;"> </span>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15710893818" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="333" id="blogsy-1417396167408.606" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8630/15710893818_be5837bab1.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The bundle I purchased came with a panel featuring various forest scenes, so I fussy cut them, framed them in gray and white, and then used them on the back. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15898406365" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="333" id="blogsy-1417396167439.4553" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7488/15898406365_f23a590360.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This poor quilt has been sitting neglected in my fabric wardrobe for a few years, and recently had a <a href="http://instagram.com/p/rzomhlKgb9/?modal=true" target="_blank" title="">wee run in with a metal drawer slide</a>. After trimming down the bottom of the quilt to cut off the hole, I debated cutting some off the top as well to recenter the quilt back. In the end I decided the future recipient (who is 3 and ADORES both owls and the colour green) won't mind the back one bit so I left it as large as possible.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15898411585" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="362" id="blogsy-1417396167485.5261" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7579/15898411585_7986ebdd65.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
It's fun to look back at a quilt that challenged me in so many ways, but also really opened my eyes to a whole new world of modern quilting. While my colour palette has matured over the years, and my FMQ has improved, it gives me a lot of joy to pull this quilt out from storage, and to gift it to someone I know will love it.</div>

Predictably, neither quilt was finished by the time Christmas rolled around and I set them aside, patted myself on the back for my "head start" on next year and moved on to the next big thing.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/10766828064" title="Christmas Fabrics by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Christmas Fabrics" height="375" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7427/10766828064_51233d29ec.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Figuring that I had already started making blocks, I didn't bother digging out the Christmas quilts until mid-October. When I finally did, I was surprised to find that I had actually only made one of the 48 blocks I needed to finish both quilts.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15251628803" title="IMG_4804 by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_4804" height="333" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7492/15251628803_728e1765c3.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<br />
Never one to be deterred by great obstacles, I set about making blocks for the quilt I wanted to keep so that I could finish it early and have some time to enjoy it in the time leading up to the Christmas season. There would still be loads of time to make a second quilt for my mom after I was snuggled under a quilt of my own.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15685283989" title="IMG_4801 by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_4801" height="333" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8596/15685283989_7428d5d55c.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<br />
Two weeks and two blocks on (bringing the score to 3 of 48 for those keeping track), my computational error became evident and I reconsidered my approach, opting to abandon my quilt completely and put all of my sewing time into the quilt for my mom.<br />
<br />
Fast forward another couple of weeks and I can honestly say that my house is just two fistfuls of tinsel away from looking like the aftermath of a particularly festive Christmas morning except with piles of fabric occupying the places traditionally reserved for piles of discarded wrapping paper.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15869326251" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="IMG_4788 by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_4788" height="333" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8638/15869326251_5911c76792.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
Christmas fabric and half finished blocks cover every surface of our living space and a "don't lean back" rule was implemented for the couch and all four dining room chairs sometime last week to protect the finished bits draped over the chair backs.<br />
<br />
Despite these efforts, I am still 9 blocks away from finishing the first quilt. Sounds manageable until you realize that once those are done they will need to be assembled into a quilt top. Borders will have to be added. A quilt back will have to be made and I'll have to bribe someone with a long-arm to quilt the darn thing before I head home for the holidays. There is a high probability that the "finished" quilt will be gifted without a binding attached.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15251711333" title="IMG_4795 by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_4795" height="333" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8587/15251711333_45e9f95a79.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<br />
I did manage to finish the first two rows of blocks last weekend. It's a small victory but enough to convince me that with some luck and a whole lot of caffeine, I might just get it (mostly) done in time.<br />

After more than 5 weeks away from my sewing machine, I was desperate to start a few new projects and tried to pick some simple ones in the hopes that they wouldn't become long-term WIPs. This strategy was obviously a good one since a little more than 2 months later, I'm proud to say that this little baby quilt is done and off to its new home.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15224576784" title="Storytime Squares Quilt by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Storytime Squares Quilt" height="333" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8677/15224576784_8c3950dcb1.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
The <a href="http://www.made-by-rae.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/StorytimeSquaresQuiltbyRae.pdf">pattern</a> was really simple and quick to put together. In about a week of leisurely sewing, I had a completed top. I didn't do anything too fancy with the quilting, opting to stick with stitch-in-the-ditch and adding another quilting line in the middle of each round of sashing to highlight the patchwork squares.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15227269873" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Storytime Sqaures Quilt by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Storytime Sqaures Quilt" height="333" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7568/15227269873_197ca4c7be.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
I backed it using some Lotus Pond yardage I had originally picked up to make a crib sheet and used a AMH voile scrap to make it wide enough. The effect is simple but it adds a bit of interest to an otherwise plain backing. I also like that it adds some extra softness to the quilt. A little gaffer wrapped in this quilt might find a bit of comfort holding this soft strip voile up to his cheek.<br />

The label is a leftover bit from the <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2014/07/from-finished-red-letter-day-quilt.html">Red Letter Day quilt</a> we made for my cousin's wedding in July. It's not a perfect match but I like how it echos the coraly pink in the binding.<br />

Welcome to Day 3 of the <a href="http://sewsisters.blogspot.ca/p/blogathon-canada-is-back.html" target="_blank">2014 Blogathon Canada</a> blog hop, hosted by <a href="http://sew-sisters.com/" target="_blank">Sew Sister's Quilt Shop</a>! On today's stop, I am excited to be representing Alberta alongside the incredibly talented Leanne from <a href="http://www.shecanquilt.ca/">She Can Quilt.</a> <br />
<br />
For new readers to our blog, my name is Kelsey, and I blog here at Everyday Fray with my cousin Amanda (who is really more of a sister/enabler/confidant). Though we are both Canadian, I am currently the only one holding down the fort up here in the Great White North, proudly residing in <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2013/06/from-k-city-with-big-heart.html" target="_blank">Calgary, Alberta</a>. While Amanda has sought temporary refuge from the cold down in sunny California, she is undoubtedly Canadian to the core (and we hope to woo her back here one day!). If you'd like to know more about our journey, feel free to read more about us <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/p/about-us.html" target="_blank">here</a>!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our blog is a compilation of both of our crafty imaginations, and the content on our blog is written by A (Amanda), K (Kelsey - that's me!), or A&K. While our focus is modern quilting, we strive to challenge ourselves, and often include various other crafts we're working on like sewing, cross stitch, needle work, weaving, knitting etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some of the items we like to share with our readers include:</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/13879028794" title="Infinity Scarf made with Robert Kaufman Dot Chambray and Liberty Tana Lawn in Mauvey by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Infinity Scarf made with Robert Kaufman Dot Chambray and Liberty Tana Lawn in Mauvey" height="500" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5584/13879028794_4b9de47794.jpg" width="375" /></a>
</div>
<br />
The finished scarf was so elegant and easy that I decided I should make 10 more using various chambrays from my stash and a half yard bundle of Liberty that I had purchased during a slip of the credit card. Possibly a moment where I had taken leave of my senses but I figured I could have them on hand as gifts and maybe set a couple aside for my own wearing pleasure.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15810122241" title="Liberty & Chambray Infinity Scarves by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Liberty & Chambray Infinity Scarves" height="333" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7525/15810122241_48112bbb81.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<br />
Although I had them cut and serged into tubes within days of planning this project they sat unfinished for months afterwards while I distracted myself with life and newer, shinier projects. I picked them up again when the occasion of another friend's birthday demanded that they be finished immediately.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
I'm quite happy with how they came out and love how the mix of prints and chambrays gives each one a distinct flavour and personality. Perhaps the best part is having a treasure trove of beautiful handmade gifts on-hand and ready to go. Hopefully this will rehabilitate my reputation as a perpetually late (handmade) gift-giver.<div class="blogger-post-footer">This post is by either Amanda or Kelsey and was first published at <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com">Everyday Fray</a>. A few weeks ago one of our favourite online fabric stores, <a href="http://hawthornethreads.com/">Hawthorne Threads</a>, emailed us wondering if we would like to participate in an exciting new venture they were launching - house designed digitally printed fabric! As long time lovers and supporters of their online store, we were thrilled to be able to get our hands on one of their stunning new lines - <a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/fabric/designer/hawthorne_threads/bengal">Bengal</a>! Today I'm honoured to be hosting the 3rd day of Hawthorne Threads' Bengal Blog Hop, as well as a generously sponsored giveaway from the designers themselves.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BOp-krBIZRY/VFmxMBiwe9I/AAAAAAAABXY/xXjKB2N3c-4/s1600/Bengal.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BOp-krBIZRY/VFmxMBiwe9I/AAAAAAAABXY/xXjKB2N3c-4/s1600/Bengal.jpg" height="170" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Even before the fabric arrived, I had a million ideas swimming around in my head with all of the possibilities of what to create and share with you during our stop along the blog hop. After seeing some teaser images, I knew I would never be able to choose only one or two prints to play with, so when a FQ bundle landed on my doorstep I immediately started plotting out a way to use all of the beautiful fabric in one collective project.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15712614111" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Kelsey's Bengal Pillows by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Kelsey's Bengal Pillows" height="347" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3939/15712614111_2e338e7780.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I typically strive for lots of colour variation in my quilts, but the idea of a two-toned <a href="http://sewkindofwonderful.com/products/metro-rings-pdf-pattern">Metro Rings Quilt</a> had been stuck in my mind for ages, and the opportunity to use every Bengal print while accomplishing this concept had me sold.<br />

Knowing that finishing a throw quilt was a bit ambitious given my time frame, I came to my senses and settled on an achievable goal of turning 8 blocks into a set of matching pillows.<br />

Lindsay's designs definitely speak to me. Fine lines, curved strokes, modern in design, but also traditional and timeless in palette - I imagine you can see why choosing only one print to play with would have been nearly impossible. I especially love that while no two prints are the same, they all work very cohesively together.</div>

A yard of the <a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/fabric/designer/hawthorne_threads/bengal/cascading_border_in_indigo">Cascading Border print</a> worked wonderfully for two zippered backs, and I am so glad I was able to tie that extra detail into the final pillows. In the above photo you can see the true colour of the Bengal indigo prints, a medium blue with a soft purplish undertone. I originally auditioned three solid background colours for my blocks (white, silver and navy), but decided on <a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/fabric/designer/hawthorne_threads/bengal/cascading_border_in_indigo">Hawthorne Hues in navy</a>, which I think really makes the prints pop.</div>

Hawthorne provides some great suggestions when sewing with their digitally printed fabric, located on their website <a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/digital_faq_pop_up.html">here</a>. After working with Bengal these past few weeks, I have some tips and suggestions of my own that might also be useful. </div>
<br />
<u>Tips/Suggestions</u>:<br />
<ul>
<li><strong>Use a fine needle</strong>: </li>
<ul>
<li>Before starting my pillows I noticed that Hawthorne suggested using a size 10/11 needle because the weave in this fabric is quite tight. Being the lazy sewer that I am, I tried to use a standard quilting needle but switched asap after my machine starting complaining loudly. Trust the professionals here and invest in a fine needle.</li>
</ul>
<li><strong>Prewash</strong>: </li>
<ul>
<li>I am not usually in the category of quilters that prewash fabrics, but I wanted to see how this digital fabric would hold up. I washed my Bengal yardage with some <a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/fabric/designer/hawthorne_threads/hawthorne_hues">Hawthorne Hues</a> and tossed in three <a href="http://www.shoutitout.com/en-US/Products/Pages/shout-color-catcher.aspx">Shout Color Catchers</a>. I was impressed that after a good wash and dry, the fabrics didn't fade, they softened up a bit, and all three catchers came out clean (even with navy yardage in the same load!).</li>
</ul>
<li><strong>Great for Curves:</strong></li>
<ul>
<li>This is the first time I have ever sewn curves, and I was surprised with how easy it was. The Quick Curve Ruler that I used helped a great deal with that, however I would also give credit to the tight weave of the Bengal fabric. The fine weave of this fabric (much tighter than regular quilting cotton) means this fabric really holds it shape well even when cut on the bias (a true benefit when working with curves!).</li>
</ul>
<li><strong>Ideal Uses:</strong></li>
<ul>
<li>The production process that is used to make Bengal uses a printer to lay pigment down on the surface of the fabric (check out Hawthorne's behind the scenes video <a href="http://vimeo.com/110365049">here</a>). This is different from traditional screen printed quilt cotton. Because the pigment sits on top of the fabric, some argue that digitally printed fabrics are less durable than screen printed fabrics - with claims that rough wear or long-term folds can lead to fading or worn bits as the pigment wears away.</li>
<li>I don't have much experience with digitally printed fabrics and can't speak to how these Hawthorne prints will hold up long-term since I've only washed them once and haven't really used the finished pillows. That being said, I'm impressed with the quality of the Hawthorne fabrics so far. Until the final verdict comes in, I'm dreaming of lighter wear items such as wall hanging, table runners, mini quilts, gift bags, pillows, or even window/shower curtains (how fun would that <a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/fabric/designer/hawthorne_threads/bengal/cascading_border_in_indigo">Cascading Border print</a> be?!).</li>
</ul>
</ul>

For the last couple of years, Judy of <a href="http://sew-sisters.com/">Sew Sister's Quilt Shop</a> has been hosting a little diddy on the internet known as <a href="http://sewsisters.blogspot.ca/p/blogathon-canada-is-back.html">Blogathon Canada</a>, and I'm happy to announce that it's coming back for its third consecutive year! I have loved following this hop in the past - finding new blogs to follow, meeting fellow Canucks with similar quilty obsessions, and last year I even won a prize! </div>

After a couple of weeks, I started going a little stir crazy and decided that I would let myself work on a baby quilt for a friend.<br />
<br />
I spent an afternoon picking a fairly straightforward pattern and laying out a couple of charm packs and some scraps from my "light neutral" drawer. From then on, I let myself make one block per day until I had a finished quilt top.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15055899484" title="Baby Love Quilt by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Baby Love Quilt" height="500" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7578/15055899484_5ac7844bf3.jpg" width="333" /></a>
</div>
<br />
Trying to avoid adding yet another WIP to the pile, I whipped up the world's simplest backing from stash and basted it in early September. I spent a few weeks trying to figure out howto quilt it before finally opting to stick with boring old Stitch-in-the-Ditch.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15056493523" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Baby Love Quilt by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Baby Love Quilt" height="500" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5608/15056493523_5edef7be1c.jpg" width="333" /></a></div>
<br />
Although it's not too exciting I think the quilting actually highlights the blocks quite nicely. The quilting and scrapp<span style="font-family: inherit;">y low volume background prints minimize the secondary square-diamond-square pattern between the the blocks that I was trying to avoid. The <a href="http://www.quiltersdreambatting.com/dream-wool.htm">Dream Wool</a> batting I used gave this quilt just the right amount of puff.</span><br />

<p style="text-align: justify;">Fall is hands down my very favourite time of the year. Honestly what's not to love? Fresh crisp air, warm spicy drinks, a house that smells of baking, boots, outfits with lots of layers, and of course, fall leaves! There is no other time of year that I feel as happy, or surprisingly as domestic, as I do in the fall. As a quilter, there is no better way to celebrate this season than making a special quilt inspired by it.<span style="text-align: center; line-height: 1.3em;"> </span></p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15419610700" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3956/15419610700_0fc554cf67.jpg" id="blogsy-1414033454261.81" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="333"></a>
</div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Back in September while pulling fabric from my stash for a baby quilt, I accidentally pulled a rather sizeable stack in a <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2014/09/from-k-around-world-blog-hop.html" target="_blank" title="">perfect fall palette</a>, quickly side-tracking my mind away from baby gifts and towards selfish fall sewing. <a href="http://msmcporkchopquilts.com" target="_blank" title="">Amanda WoodWard-Jennings</a>' quilt pattern <a href="http://www.larkcrafts.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/modern-maples.pdf" target="_blank" title="">Modern Maples</a> immediately came to mind, and seemed like the perfect solution to all my fall inspired quilty desires.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15605193725" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5600/15605193725_318d7f6cc3.jpg" id="blogsy-1414033454229.5144" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="333"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I have been on the road for work on and off since Labour Day, so most of the cutting and sewing of this quilt top happened in various hotel rooms across southern Alberta. If you're ever looking for a great portable pattern, this is it!</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15606024602" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3932/15606024602_941b9e3a50.jpg" id="blogsy-1414033454217.5593" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="356"></a><span style="line-height: 1.3em; text-align: justify;"> </span>
</div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I was inspired by so many beautiful variations of this quilt design that I found online. I knew when it came to the leaf blocks, I felt like more was better, and though I'm not typically one for sashing, I couldn't resist tossing in more low volume neutral prints to mix things up.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/14985054293" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3936/14985054293_00c186546a.jpg" id="blogsy-1414033454208.651" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="333"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I have been severely tied up with work this past month so I unfortunately missed by dream deadline of finishing this by Halloween, but at any rate, I am thrilled that the top is now complete.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15418579299" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5599/15418579299_f4d8afccf2.jpg" id="blogsy-1414033454270.7083" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="341"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">My new self imposed deadline for this quilt is to hopefully finish it before December rolls around. I can't wait to make the back so I can quilt it!</p>

For every type of craft I have ever tried, there are at least a couple of unfinished projects waiting in the wings. I'm not really sure why this has become such a recurring pattern since I love the feeling of finishing a project, sending it off to its new home and watching people enjoy it for years to come.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Most of my quilts end up getting stalled after they are basted and ready to quilt. Currently, I have at least 6 quilts that are just waiting to be quilted and bound. I can't quite explain it but there is definitely something about the process of choosing a quilting design and forcing the quilt sandwich through my machine that makes me cast a project aside faster than you can say "new fabric."<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15358284150" title="Stack of Quilty WIPs by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Stack of Quilty WIPs" height="333" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5600/15358284150_992e4a409c.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<div>
<br />
Three of these almost finished quilts are taking up some prime real estate on our living room couch. I'm going to try and tackle them this weekend since two are baby quilts that should really get mailed off before the intended recipients start walking.<br />
<br />
That said, there is a good chance I'll get distracted by this little number somewhere along the way. That is the <a href="http://www.rosewoodxstitch.com/catalog.php?item=179">Spring Quakers</a> pattern by Rosewood Manor that I started just about a year ago.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/14923832463" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Spring Quakers Cross Stitch by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Spring Quakers Cross Stitch" height="333" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3951/14923832463_16916a8dd2.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
Most of my slow and steady progress on this project happens when I am supposed to working on something else. Those beautiful hand-dyed Valdani flosses with their perfectly saturated colours are irresistible when facing something I "should" be doing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15357943387" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Spring Quakers Valdani Floss by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Spring Quakers Valdani Floss" height="333" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3943/15357943387_a43f12d710.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
Do you have some long-forgotten WIP skeletons in your closet? At what stage do you usually get bogged down? Any tricks for "breaking the cycle?" Please do tell!<br />

After a couple of weeks of dedicated sewing, I managed to finish up my <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2014/09/from-heather-ross-rainbow-quilt.html">Heather Ross Rainbow Quilt</a> top last week.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15506833875" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Heather Ross Rainbow Quilt Top by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Heather Ross Rainbow Quilt Top" height="333" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3944/15506833875_5b9899fe76.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
I used a <a href="http://www.windhamfabrics.com/cgi-bin/fabricshop/projects.cgi?patternID=427">free pattern from Windham</a> that was released with the Briar Rose collection and opted to add four rows of blocks lengthwise and a half block width-wise so that it ended up a little closer to twin-sized. This also allowed me to use more fabrics to better flesh out the rainbow gradation.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15503631091" title="Heather Ross Rainbow Quilt Top by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Heather Ross Rainbow Quilt Top" height="333" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3930/15503631091_0b29a0f2ff.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This was such a fun project to put together. The fabrics are gorgeous and I really liked the process of setting the blocks on point. It meant that every row was different enough to keep me entertained throughout all that plain vanilla piecing.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15320222167" title="Heather Ross Rainbow Quilt Top by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Heather Ross Rainbow Quilt Top" height="333" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3929/15320222167_c92342a0bd.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I really want to keep the backing pretty simple and found some beautiful Nani Iro double gauze in my stash that will be perfect. Basting this quilt will be my first priority when I wrap up a few more baby/Christmas gifts that have been happening behind the scenes.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I really can't wait to can enjoy the finished quilt. It is just too lovely to spend much time in my WiP pile.</div>

Realizing at the last possible moment that it wasn't going to get done unless someone gave me a <a href="http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Time-Turner">time-turner</a> for Christmas, I shoved it into the long-term planning box hoping that I would get it done in time this year.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15503478391" title="Tinsel Treeskirt by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Tinsel Treeskirt" height="333" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5607/15503478391_dd40b05541.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<div>
<br />
Sometime last spring, I pulled out the top and basted it using a Marimekko print I picked up from my local Crate & Barrel outlet for about $2.00 a yard for the back. It continued to sit while I thought about how I wanted to quilt it until I saw how Kelsey chose to quilt her <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2014/10/from-k-finished-constellations-camping.html">camping quilt</a>.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15506285852" title="Tinsel Treeskirt by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Tinsel Treeskirt" height="333" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5616/15506285852_e3af7542ca.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
This was my first attempt at free-motion quilting and although I was a bit scared. I had a ton of fun with the freedom it gave me. It really forced me to let go of my perfectionist tendencies and even though it's far from perfect, I really love the effect.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15506248842" title="Tinsel Treeskirt by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Tinsel Treeskirt" height="333" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2945/15506248842_88bdcb9311.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<div>
<div>
<br />
I opted to cut a smaller tree hole than called for in the pattern (only about 3.5") to account for the fact that the intended recipient uses an artificial tree. I used some purple double fold bias binding tape that I found in my stash to bind it and make the ties. Love finding exactly what I need in the stash!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/everydayfray/15319738269" title="Tinsel Treeskirt by Everyday Fray, on Flickr"><img alt="Tinsel Treeskirt" height="500" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5611/15319738269_28db1f285a.jpg" width="333" /></a>
</div>
<div>
<br />
I'm really glad I managed to finish this with more than 2 months spare. Now to tackle the rest of last year's Christmas gift list. Wish me luck!</div>

<p style="text-align: justify; ">18 months ago when Amanda was teaching me how to cast on to start my very first knitting project, I would never have imaged that I would be sharing a finished sweater less than two years later. Today that's exactly what I'm doing!</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15262668689" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3934/15262668689_8de90f1a07_c.jpg" id="blogsy-1412534000711.371" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="750"></a><span style="text-align: justify; line-height: 1.3em;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
This is my new favourite cardigan, and not just because of the cashmere blend yarn (though of course that doesn't hurt!).<span style="text-align: center; line-height: 1.3em;"> </span>
</div></span>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15262729490" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3929/15262729490_f02c6bfab0.jpg" id="blogsy-1412534000707.7595" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="370"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><span style="text-align: start;"><u><strong>Front details:</strong></u></span><br></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;">The lace work was a bit tricky at first (surprisingly more challenging than one would suspect) but after looking at Ravelry a bit, it didn't take long to see where most folks go wrong. Some rows end in a YO and it's easy to forget if you are busy watching tv or otherwise not laying close attention. Jane has provided charts in an updated release of this pattern so I'm sure if I make it a second time I won't run into any issues. </span></p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15446277971" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5598/15446277971_428a6f3b86.jpg" id="blogsy-1412534000732.843" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="366"></a></div>

</div>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;">Part of what drew me to this pattern was the lace work in the back. I tend to wear a lot of cardigans at work since Canada tends to be a bit nippy. The lace work seemed like the perfect touch of softness to a cardigan that will get a lot of wear with dresses.</span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"> Last month I shared an update on the <a href="http://www.everydayfray.com/2014/09/from-k-travelux-pearl-update-1st-year.html" target="_blank" title="">retro camper</a> that my hubs and I were busy working on over the summer. While he was labouring over custom woodworking, plumbing and electrical work... I prioritized the important glamping details... a camping quilt of course!</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15238621509" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2947/15238621509_c40bf6ed52.jpg" id="blogsy-1412313541096.688" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="372"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I had been slowly collecting prints from Lizzy House's Constellations line for months and when we purchased our Travelux Pearl, I knew instantly that this line was perfect for a camping quilt.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15402344636" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5599/15402344636_96f9304e90.jpg" id="blogsy-1412313541009.2695" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="333"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">To round out my Constellations collection, I added various bits of other Lizzy House fabrics including some Jewels and Pearl Bracelets. </p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15402351686" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5597/15402351686_5869510904_z.jpg" id="blogsy-1412313541022.5657" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="590"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">After trying out a few shades of pearl bracelets for the background, I landed on a dark gray with metalic shimmer to add some dreamy moodiness to the quilt.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15238728340" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2943/15238728340_f445b7ac6b.jpg" id="blogsy-1412313541072.98" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="333"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This quilt turned out to be larger than I had anticipated, so I had to get a bit creative on the backing as a result. To compliment the front, I used a small scrap from each print to replicate the purple-to-white gradient shown on the quilt top.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15425096242" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3931/15425096242_357d3a077d.jpg" id="blogsy-1412313541006.3723" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="333"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I tried a new-to-me FMQ design on this quilt since stars just seemed like an obvious choice. I love the crinkly texture that appears between the stars, and hope that with time it will continue to emphasize their shapes.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80618546@N02/15238915240" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3935/15238915240_7a778d0f72.jpg" id="blogsy-1412313541071.6863" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="333"></a></div>
